With the 82nd overall pick, the Tennessee Titans select defensive tackle Mike Martin from Michigan.
I expect Martin to bolster the run defense as a complement to Jurrell Casey. He should be an immediate upgrade over both Sen'Derrick Marks and Shaun Smith, who may become expendable.
Martin is regarded as a run-stuffer without much pass rush ability, so his role seems pretty clear cut. Edit: Mike Mayock writes that he does have the ability to be an interior pass rusher. I've now read several conflicting scouting reports on him - some say he can't rush the passer, which was my initial recollection of him, and Mayock, whose opinion I respect, says he can.
I guess we'll just have to wait and see. I'm going to take the approach that Martin should be the run-stopper the Titans need and if he's able to provide some pass rush as well, then that'll just be gravy.
The Titans also selected a DT in the third round last year (Casey), and if Martin produces as well as Casey did, I'll be quite satisfied with this pick.
There seems to be a consensus on this pick. With any luck Martin will be the Run stopping version of Klug. After doing very little research on this player, I am sold. With a 4.88 40 time and 36 bench reps at the combine, Martin shows the athletic ability and strength that will translate to the NFL. Scouts say he has an excellent motor, but has maxed out his frame and has small arms. At 6'1" and 306, I believe he has adequate size for defensive tackle. Technique is coachable, work ethic isn't. Unless Smith improves, Martin could see some serious playing time his rookie year. At this point I think this was a great pick and look forward to seeing Martin wreak some havoc in the trenches. Another guy I would like to see the Titans draft is Vaughn Meatoga, DT from Hawaii. He is 6'1" 294 lbs and ran a 4.5 40 with 27 bench reps at the combine. That's insane for someone his size. He is basically just a work at warrior at this point, but what better position to take a chance on a that type of guy then Defensive Tackle? Speed seems to be the Titans theme in this years draft. All 3 players selected so far can be con sidered quick for their position. So far that theme seems to be working as the Titans are putting together a nice draft class. I'm just hoping they don't take it to an Oakland Raiders extent. The next position that needs to be addressed is the Offensive Line or DE. Finding a starting Guard or Center (maybe both) remains a need for the Titans.
A GREAT pick! I loved watching this guy in college. He always stood out to me with how well he's always in on the play. Very hard-nosed dude. A solid addition. Adding his motor to Klug's and Casey's ability is a huge plus. Now we need to get a DE! Cam Johnson comes to mind. If he's not available, hopefully Ben Jones will be available at Center.
