The Tennessee Titans could easily be 1-11 right now, instead of 4-8, if the outcome of a few plays had not been in the Titans' favor. Three of the Titans' four wins were by a total of just seven points - a one-point win and two three-point wins - so all three of those wins could have been losses if just one play in each of those games had been different.
Nice post, Andrew.
In the Pittsburgh and Buffalo games, the opponents didn't recover any of the fumbles. The way the Titans moved the ball most of the second half against the Bills, if they don't recover that sack-fumble that gives them great field position, or if Nate Washington, or if the Bills managed to recover the ball Nate Washington fumbled on the eventual game-winning drive, they lose that game. Neither fumble in the Steelers game was quite so momentous (Britt fumbled on a FG drive, but the Steelers committed DPI on the play, while the Steelers drove for a TD even without recovering Hasselbeck's fumble on a third-down sack).
To be fair, the Titans have been in a couple of other closer games, so you'd expect them to get the breaks in one or two of them. They probably "should" be 2-12 or 3-11 right now (the Football Outsiders Estimated Wins formula has them at 2.4).
Great write up Andrew. 1-11 may actually have been better for the team. It would likely lead to a total house cleaning...I fear Munchak or, worse than that, Jerry Gray may still be retained. In reality I think Reinfeldt needs to go too and take his boy Ruston with him. Also, 1- 11 would mean better draft picks. The Titans have a lot of holes to fill, so they need to be active in free agency and draft well if they are going to turn this thing around. I see Huge needs on the O-line, at DE, and at S. They need CB depth too. The draft alone is not going to fill those needs. I would literally only keep Jordan Babineux at safety. Afalava and RoJo are not NFL caliber safeties, and at the money he is paid Michael Griffin has to be cut (he only have money guaranteed in the first year of his contract). Morgan is not a pass rusher. Wimbley is mediocre. that all we have at DE. O-line...Harris and Amano need to go. Matthews is barely a suitable backup. Hutchinson is old and not too good anymore and can't make it through a whole season. So we need at least one starter and some solid depth behind them. Big trouble in Nashville is all I can say.
