|Will Jared Cook be wearing two-tone blue in 2013?|
In April and June, I wrote about the Titans who were in the final year of their contracts. Now that the Titans have played three quarters of the season, it's a good time to revisit the subject. These are the starters, plus a few notables, whose contracts expire at the end of the season.
TE Jared Cook - There's no doubt Cook is an extremely talented tight end, and one who could become a top tier TE in a system that more frequently utilized those talents. Tom has written on several occasions about the two different offenses the Titans employed under Chris Palmer - the Craig Stevens offense and the Jared Cook offense - so the decision whether or not to re-sign Cook (or to franchise him) will be a philosophical one by the Titans. How committed are they to the "Jared Cook offense"?
Heres what you do, franchise cook give him one more year to prove himself as Thompson develops. Definitely sign Bironas and Velasco, completely agree with that. I would also keep marks however, he is actually having a really good year if you've been able to watch the games. Their D line is young and improving, all we need to do is add a DE to go with Wimbley and Morgan and with the rotation of casey, marks, klug and martin going forward you become a young deep solid front line. Than when you go to the draft and FA you can worry about other needs besides DT. Thats just my opinion but everyone else is gone by my estimation.
Interesting. With the exception of Velasco and Bironas, everyone else can be let go. Velasco is a must sign for me. The Titans have too many other holes to fill to let him go. He may not be a top 10 centre in the league, but he is better than most. I see your point about Marks, but I think that Martin can replace him or that the Titans could easily find another DT in free agency that could give the team the same bulk in the middle. The only other guy on this list that I think the Titans might consider re-signing is Cook, but that is only if someone better isn't available in free agency and his price tag is reasonable. He hasn't shown enough to be franchised and he should not be paid like a number one TE.
