Tennessee Titans vs. Washington Redskins preview

Written by Drexel Perry on .

The Tennessee Titans (5-4) will be in search of yet another win against an NFC opponent as they play host to the Washington Redskins (4-5) tomorrow at LP Field.

A victory over the Redskins would mark the Titans' 13th consecutive win over their interconference opposition.

Both teams are looking to wipe the bitter taste of defeat from their mouths on Sunday. The Titans lost an extremely winnable game at Miami last weekend while the entire nation watched a seemingly helpless Redskins' team get throttled by Michael Vick and the Philadelphia Eagles last Monday night.

Up next...a preview and prediction for tomorrow's Titans/Redskins interconference skirmish.

Titans-Redskins injury report and impact

Written by Tom Gower on .

The final injury report is out for Sunday's game, and includes the following names:

WASHINGTON REDSKINS
OUT: RB Ryan Torain (hamstring)
QUESTIONABLE: DE Jeremy Jarmon (hamstring), T Jammal Brown (head), WR Brandon Banks (knee), DE Kedric Golston (elbow),  G Artis Hicks (thigh), S LaRon Landry (Achilles), RB Clinton Portis (groin), CB Carlos Rogers (hamstring)
PROBABLE: QB Donovan McNabb (hamstring)

TENNESSEE TITANS
OUT: WR Kenny Britt (hamstring), TE Craig Stevens (knee)
DOUBTFUL: QB Kerry Collins (calf)
QUESTIONABLE: S Vinny Fuller (hamstring)
PROBABLE: DT Tony Brown (knee), S Cortland Finnegan (shin), K Rob Bironas (back)

For the Redskins, the big news is probably at running back, where Ryan Torain is out and anointed Clinton Portis as the starter.  As Anthony Brown noted in our Q&A, Portis is by far the superior pass-blocker, where the Redskins need help the most.  If right tackle Jammal Brown is unable to go, Jason Babin could be in for another big day.  The other name to watch is Brandon Banks, who's primarily the kick returner.  The Titans' biggest weakness on special teams this year has been their occasional problem containing opposing kick returners, and Banks is a good one.

For the Titans, the biggest news is by far that Craig Stevens had knee surgery and will be out for a couple weeks.  I wrote about the Titans' struggles in the run game on the edge last month, and one of the players I highlighted was Bo Scaife.  Casually speaking, it seems that Mike Heimerdinger agreed with me.  The last couple weeks, the in-line tight end has very frequently been Craig Stevens, who's a far better blocker than Bo.  Bo, meanwhile, has played in-line almost exclusively in two tight end sets or in obvious passing downs, and more frequently has lined up as an H-back in a wing position or in the slot.  Even if Redskins DC Jim Haslett does react strongly by doubling Moss, don't be surprised to see CJ struggle trying to get the edge.  Oh, and hope Vince Young doesn't get hurt, as I trust no sixth-round rookie who's never taken an NFL snap.  Don't be too surprised to see Kerry Collins get the nod as the 3rd quarterback and come in just to take snaps and hand off if VY is ruled out for the game.

Titans-Redskins question and answer exchange

Written by Andrew Strickert on .

This week it will be our good fortune to be joined by an excellent writer and my good friend Anthony Brown for our weekly question and answer exchange.  Anthony is the head guy at Redskins Hog Heaven, which received a five-star rating from DC Pro Sports Report.

As always, we'd like for you to suggest the questions we ask.  I'm sure there will be some about Fat Albert.  Perhaps some about Donovan McNabb and Mike Shanahan.  What would you like to know about the Redskins?  What would you like to know about this week's game from the other side's perspective?

Please leave your questions in the comments section below.

Things we learned about the Titans and Dolphins

The Titans think Bo Scaife is a better option than Randy Moss.
I learned a lot from watching the Titans at the Dolphins yesterday and hope you did as well.

Since the Dolphins were the Titans' hosts on Sunday, let's start this with things we learned about them.

Contrary to popular belief, the Dolphins are capable of scoring more than two touchdowns in a game.

Anthony Fasano is the second coming of Antonio Gates. The Dolphins did an awesome job keeping him under wraps before springing him loose upon an unsuspecting Titans defense.

Tyler Thigpen is the next Dan Marino. Did you see the way he picked that defense apart?

Titans fall to Dolphins 29-17

Written by Drexel Perry on .

Thanks to a "bend-and-break "pass defense that allowed three Miami quarterbacks to combine for over 300 yards passing, the debut of Randy Moss in a Tennessee Titans' uniform was overshadowed by the team's disappointing 29-17 loss to the Dolphins.

Moss only caught one pass on the afternoon; a 26-yarder late in the game. Meanwhile, the Dolphin receiving threats, regardless of who was throwing them the football, were busy making life miserable for the Titans' pass defense as indicated by their cumulative 323-yard effort.

Up next, additional thoughts on today's Titans' loss.

Titans-Dolphins inactives, gameday thread

Written by Tom Gower on .

The inactives list for Randy Moss's first game as a Tennessee Titan is out, and includes the following names:

MIAMI DOLPHINS
S Tyrone Culver, DE Clifton Geathers, T Matt Kopa, T Lydon Murtha, CB Nate Ness, TE Mickey Shuler, QB Tyler Thigpen (#3 QB), WR Roberto Wallace

TENNESSEE TITANS
WR Kenny Britt, DT Marques Douglas, G Ryan Durand, WR Lavelle Hawkins, S Robert Johnson, T/G Troy Kropog, CB Ryan Mouton, QB Rusty Smith (#3 QB)

The big news is that while Vince Young is active, but Kerry Collins will be starting today's game.  Justin Gage returns to the lineup, but Moss and Washington will be your starters at wideout.  I think Gage gives you something different than those guys, so I'll be paying attention to how much work each of the wideouts gets and what kind of routes they run.  Comparing Damian Williams' snaps to Gage's may be an interesting exercise.
