Enemy Intelligence: Buffalo Bills

Written by Tom Gower on .

The Titans make another visit to Buffalo this weekend against the Bills. It seemed like the book was written on the Bills-a week after giving up 45 points to New England in the second half, they gave up 45 to the San Francisco 49ers in another blowout loss. Then, they visited Arizona and hold the Cardinals-granted, not a great offensive team, though I'd say they're not that much worse than the Niners-to 13 points and win in overtime. That victory improved their record to 3-3 along with everybody else in the AFC East.

For this post, I watched both the 45-3 road loss to the 49ers two weeks ago and the 16-13 overtime win in Arizona against the Cardinals last week.

UFR: Jared Cook's play against the Steelers

Written by Tom Gower on .

In some ways, the most notable Titans player from last Thursday's game against the Steelers was tight end Jared Cook. After a great start to the season where he was virtually the only part of the offense that was working, his role had been minimized the last couple weeks. Part of that was due to injury, but Matt Hasselbeck admitting after the Vikings game he should have looked for Cook earlier than he did. Cook during the week then had an at times uncomfortable radio appearance in Nashville.

When Thursday rolled around, I (and many others) were expecting a larger role for Cook. He finished with four catches on as many targets for 54 yards, including a 25-yard grab that set up the game-winning field goal. Three of those four targets came in the two-minute drill at the end of either half, though, which seemed to put the lie the idea that the Titans were looking to actually feature Cook.

Still, given everything that's happened with him lately, I thought it would be worth taking a look at Cook's day against the Steelers in more detail. So, after the jump, what I saw from Cook.

Tennessee Titans Week 6 Snap Report

Written by Tom Gower on .

The NFL has started officially keeping track of player participation data and releasing that information to the media. Here's how the Titans lined up in yesterday's win against the Steelers.

Offense (71 total)
QB: Matt Hasselbeck 71
RB/FB: Chris Johnson 63, Quinn Johnson 23, Darius Reynaud 5, Jamie Harper 2
TE: Craig Stevens 46, Jared Cook 44, Taylor Thompson 15
WR: Nate Washington 55, Kenny Britt 45, Kendall Wright 31, Damian Williams 26
OL: Leroy Harris 71, Steve Hutchinson 71, Michael Roos 71, David Stewart 71, Fernando Velasco 71

Analysis: This is really the first time all year Craig Stevens has gotten significant playing time with Jared Cook healthy. Obviously that's partly a result of the game situation, but it's also the result of more multiple-TE sets. Chris Johnson's previous high was 50 snaps in a game; Javon Ringer's injury was a factor here. Kendall Wright's previous low mark was 34 snaps in the game against San Diego where the Titans only had 42 snaps. Britt's season high and fewer 3-WR sets mattered here.

Defense (64 total)
DE: Kamerion Wimbley 58, Derrick Morgan 55, Scott Solomon 11, Pannel Egboh 7
DT: Mike Martin 48, Sen'Derrick Marks 42, Karl Klug 15, Jurrell Casey 15
LB: Colin McCarthy 64, Akeem Ayers 58, Zach Brown 27
CB: Jason McCourty 64, Alterraun Verner 61, Ryan Mouton 37, Coty Sensabaugh 1
S: Jordan Babineaux 64, Michael Griffin 64, Robert Johnson 12, Al Afalava 3

Analysis: The Titans don't really believe in rotating their defensive ends. This is something I'm just taking as given going forward. Martin was the beneficiary of Casey's shoulder injury. Jerry Gray mentioned at this week's media session you'd probably see both Zach Brown and Will Witherspoon play this week. Not on defense. Al Afalava's snaps came at the expense of Robert Johnson in the Ruby package.

Other: Beau Brinkley, Tommie Campbell, Zac Diles, Kevin Matthews, Tim Shaw, Will Witherspoon each played only on special teams. Rusty Smith and Byron Stingily did not appear in the game.

Bironas lifts Titans to win over Steelers, 26-23

Written by Tom Gower on .

Ah, that headline feels good to write. The Titans got a few breaks, made some of their own, and at the end of the day Rob Bironas hit a field goal from 40 yards out to upset the Pittsburgh Steelers, 26-23, at home.

Like the Lions win and unlike the four losses coming in, the game was competitive throughout. Mike Wallace beat Jason McCourty plus Michael Griffin's help for an 82-yard TD after three field goals, two by the Titans. The defense held after that, though, and a blocked punt by Tim Shaw at the end of the first quarter gave the Titans the ball at the 1. Jamie Harper punched in a score two plays later, and the Titans added another field goal before halftime to go in with a 16-10 lead.

It looked like the Titans might fall prey to their old second half defensive woes, as the Steelers took a 23-16 lead with scores on their first three second half possessions. The Titans tied the game, though, thanks in part to a big third down conversion where flexing Darius Reynaud out wide left the defense confused and Kendall Wright picked up 35 yards down to the 15. Kenny Britt finished off the drive with a TD grab, albeit a play later than he should have. The Steelers made it to field goal range, but Ben Roethlisberger missed Heath Miller on third down and they settled for a career long 54-yard field goal, a field goal that went just short. With good field position, the Titans didn't need many yards, and Jared Cook provided the ones they did, outrunning James Harrison for a 25-yard gain to set up the game-winner and a pleasant surprise.

With a big win like this one, there are a lot of positives. Special teams stood out again, as Darius Reynaud had some risky returns but didn't get burned. Rob Bironas was a perfect 4-for-4. The blocked punt was more a screwup than a function of great design, but it was a game-changing type play. Matt Hasselbeck threw a pick, but looked a lot like the fairly functional Matt Hasselbeck we saw last year. Kenny Britt had a rough night at times but ended up with 62 yards and a TD. Kendall Wright had the big grab and six more. Chris Johnson didn't look great, but generally got the yards that were blocked and a hair more. Jason McCourty did a good job of recovering from the early Wallace score and did a great job to pick off a ball in the red zone late in the first half. The defense did a great job of getting off the field on third downs, especially in the first half, and didn't give the Steelers any freebies when Roethlisberger missed a couple throws in third downs. There were a couple negatives, too, but I won't dwell on those tonight. Instead, the Titans finish the brutal first six games at 2-4 and go into a long weekend on a positive tonight. For tonight, that's all I need.
