2011 Tennessee Titans offseason positional analysis: QB

Quarterback is clearly the most uncertain position facing the Tennessee Titans this offseason.  Vince Young will be released, unless some other team is foolish enough to trade for him.  Kerry Collins and Chris Simms will both become unrestricted free agents, which leaves Rusty Smith as the only quarterback on the roster who will remain under contract.

Titans GM Mike Reinfeldt has confirmed the team plans to acquire a veteran quarterback during the offseason and will also select one in the draft.

As the NFL draft approaches, we will certainly have a lot more to write about quarterbacks who the Titans may select, but for now our focus will be on the veterans, and which one may be wearing two-tone blue this season.

2011 Tennessee Titans offseason positional analysis: RB

Written by Drexel Perry on .

It's been a whirlwind of an offseason for the Tennessee Titans.

With the departure of Jeff Fisher and the hiring of Mike Munchak, a new offensive and defensive coordinator and the inevitable release/trade of QB Vince Young, our focus as of late has been upon the sea of change that's taken place in recent weeks.

Now that the dust has settled a bit, it's time to resume our normal offseason activities at Total Titans by examining how the team stacks up at each spot. We'll begin our annual offseason positional analyses by taking a look at the running back position.

Upon further review: Michael Griffin's interceptions in 2010

Written by Tom Gower on .

Just to get back in the flow of things after my latest mini-hiatus, I thought I'd write about Michael Griffin's interceptions in 2010.  He had four, one each in four consecutive games in October, when the Titans roared to a 5-2 start and he was named AFC Defensive Player of the Month.  We'll be starting our positional analysis series soon, and I have a longer post I've been procrastinating on for a while looking at the defensive performance as a whole, but I thought I'd just start with this.

Chris Palmer named as Titans OC

Written by Andrew Strickert on .

Mike Munchak just called a screen pass on third and long by selecting Chris Palmer as the Titans new offensive coordinator.  It's the type of call that usually fails to pick up a first down but occasionally works.  It's usually a safe call, one that may not gain any yardage but at least it's not as risky as throwing the ball downfield into double coverage.

Translation: the Titans offense probably won't get any better but there's not much risk it will get worse either.

The 61-year old Palmer is probably best known to Titans fans as the offensive coordinator for the Jaguars (1997-98) and for the expansion Texans (2001-05).  He was also the head coach of the expansion Browns (1999-2000) and was once the wide receivers coach for the Oilers (1990-92).

I am completely underwhelmed.  Munch fired Dinger to make this move?

Matt Flynn: QB wildcard for the Tennessee Titans

Written by Drexel Perry on .

One coordinator position down, one more to go.

With the hiring of Jerry Gray, the Tennessee Titans have found their head honcho on the defensive side of the football. Meanwhile, new head coach Mike Munchak is still in need of a guy to run the offense.

As Andrew mentioned in his most recent article, experience running a West Coast offense has been a shared characteristic of some of the names associated with the Titans' vacant offensive coordinator position. I agree with my writing colleague that this could also be an indicator of the type of quarterback the team is looking for as they continue to conduct their search for a new starting signal-caller.

We've already examined a few QB possibilities with West Coast experience such as Kevin Kolb, Donovan McNabb and Matt Hasselbeck. Now it's time to take a look at a sleeper of sorts: Green Bay's Matt Flynn, a young talent who may have displayed enough promise in only 1 NFL start to make some team giddy enough to send the Packers a high-draft pick in exchange for Aaron Rodgers' backup.

Titans hire Jerry Gray as DC

Written by Andrew Strickert on .

It's been five days since Mike Munchak was named as the new head coach of the Titans and I like some of the moves he has made.  Hiring Bruce Matthews was one.  Adding Jerry Gray as his defensive coordinator today is another.

Gray, as many Titans fans remember, was once the secondary coach here.  Former Titans safety Blaine Bishop said on the radio the other day that Gray was the best position coach he ever had and was very good at teaching technique.  The Oilers/Titans were 27th, 20th, 25th and 1st in pass defense (yards) and t-15th, t-21st, t-27th and 1st in pass defense (touchdowns) in Gray's four years as secondary coach.

Shaun Rogers released: Should the Tennessee Titans be interested?

Written by Drexel Perry on .

Once upon a time, Albert Haynesworth clogged the middle of the Tennessee Titans' defense, wreaking havoc with his ability to stop the run while also chasing down opposing quarterbacks.

Since his departure, the Titans have failed to replace "Fat Albert's" bulky presence. Heading into the offseason, acquiring the services of a wide body at DT was definitely on the team's to-do list.

Yesterday, the Cleveland Browns released Shaun Rogers, a 6'4", 350 pound behemoth who will now be available to any and everyone once free agency begins. Considering the team's need for some beef at the DT position, should Rogers be on the Titans' radar?
