Titans assistant coaches - who should stay and who should go

Of the remaining coaches on the Titans' staff, there are only two I'd really like for Mike Munchak to retain -- Steve Watterson and Dowell Loggains.  I would have liked for Munch to keep Mike Heimerdinger as well, but that didn't happen.

I'm ambivalent about the other coaches.  I wouldn't mind seeing any of them go.  On the other hand, if Munch likes any of them enough to keep them, I'm all right with that too.

Here are my thoughts on each of the remaining Titans assistant coaches.

Steve Watterson - Probably the most underappreciated coach on the Titans staff, at least among fans.  I'll bet Munch appreciates him, though.  I don't see Munch letting him go at all.

Dinger out; could Ray Sherman be in?

Will Ray Sherman replace Mike Heimerdinger?

It's not a complete surprise that Mike Munchak has decided to release Mike Heimerdinger from his duties as offensive coordinator.  I liked Dinger and hoped he would be retained, but it's Munch's prerogative to form his own staff.  All the best to Dinger and best wishes for his health and continued recovery.

The obvious question is who will Munch bring in to replace Dinger?  I'm sure having a previous relationship with Munch will not be a prerequisite, but many coaches, especially new ones, like to hire guys they are familiar with and know they can work with.  Looking back at guys he has coached with, I reviewed a few names.  Norm Chow is a definite no.  Sherman Smith is a probable no.  Craig Johnson would be a possibility, but he just accepted a job with the Vikings.

Then there's Ray Sherman, the former Titans’ wide receivers coach.

Could Billy Volek return to the Tennessee Titans?

Written by Drexel Perry on .

Now that the worst-kept secret of Mike Munchak being named the Tennessee Titans' next head coach has finally become a reality, it's time to re-shift the attention towards filling the team's other gaping hole: finding themselves a quarterback.

In recent weeks, we've discussed several veteran signal-callers who may be available via free agency or trade once the NFL labor situation gets resolved.

With Jeff Fisher leaving the building and Mike Munchak serving as the new sheriff in town, there's another veteran QB out there that hasn't been mentioned who is a free agent and could serve as a stop-gap solution if the Titans decide to spend a high draft selection on a youngster.

His name, you ask? Former Tennessee Titan signal-caller Billy Volek.

Mike Munchak hired as new Titans head coach

Photo by Andrew Strickert for Total TitansMike Munchak certainly wasn't the guy I wanted to be the Titans' new head coach.  I would have preferred someone from the outside, and either of the two external candidates, Perry Fewell or Mike Mularkey, would have been OK with me.

That's no reflection on Munch and nothing against him.  I just feel it would have been best to bring in someone fresh.

I've got to say I'm disappointed in the process, which was a sham.  It looks like Munchak was going to get the job all along.  Why else would Gregg Williams withdraw his name from consideration?

Thoughts on Titans head coach candidates Perry Fewell and Mike Mularkey

Long-time readers of Total Titans know I like to reach out to fellow bloggers on occasion, to get their thoughts on certain players. I’m doing the same now, but with a twist - this time my inquiries are about coaches.

Mike Munchak is reported to be the front-runner to be the new Titans head coach and may even be announced as such shortly. However, I don’t want to forget two outsiders who have interviewed for the position, Giants defensive coordinator Perry Fewell and Falcons offensive coordinator Mike Mularkey.

To look at those two men, I asked Andy Furman of Ultimate NYG and Rob Kelley of Dirty Bird South for their thoughts.

It's not a great day to be a Tennessee Titans fan

Written by Andrew Strickert on .

It's probably a great day to be a Green Bay Packers fan.  Today, Packers fans are enjoying a Super Bowl appearance and anticipating the celebration of another Lombardi Trophy.  Packers fans can also rejoice in having one of the best quarterbacks in the league, one who could be the best in just a few years.

It's not such a great day to be a Tennessee Titans fan.  We aren't enjoying another Super Bowl and we don't have a quarterback, let alone one of the best in the league.

When I watch the Super Bowl tonight, I will be reminded time and again that the Titans passed on Aaron Rodgers in the 2005 draft, knowing they could afford to keep Steve McNair for only one more season, that his pending $50 million option would be unaffordable.

2011 Tennessee Titans first-round pick: Early Mock drafts part II

Written by Drexel Perry on .

About a month ago, I took a look at early mock drafters' expectations of what the Tennessee Titans would do with their 8th overall selection in April's Draft. To no one's surprise, the majority of the mock drafts that I selected had the Titans doing the expected: utilizing their first-rounder to replace soon-to-be jettisoned QB Vince Young.

As promised, since it's almost a month later, I'll once again post the results of several mock drafts to get an idea of the path others believe the Titans will travel towards with their first-round draft pick.
